***NOT YET DONE IN SOLHAUG (2001)***
One of several wooden medieval fonts in Norway C-14 dated by Solhaug (2001). Solhaug (2019): 116: "Verified medieval fonts of pine [wood]: barrel shaped, Øye in Oppland; rectangular, Nore in Buskerud; hour-glass shaped, Amotsdal in Telemark plus Veggli, Uvdal, and Rollag in Buskerud. Font cover: Lomen in Oppland." The entry for this church in Kikrken.no [https://kirken.no/nb-NO/fellesrad/Rollag/kirker/veggli-kirke/] [accessed 8 Dece, ber 2022] reports that some furnishings from the medieval church, including the baptismal font, were moved over to the new church: "En god del av inventaret i dagens kirke stammer fra den gamle stavkirken. The entry for this church in Norges Kirker [https://norgeskirker.no/wiki/Veggli_kirke] [accessed 8 December 2022] descrines the font as having a cylindrical main body of wood in which a circular soapstone basin is inserted; the insrt has no drain hole but the wooden body does, all the way through; the source further notes that layers of paint were removed from the font in 1he 1970s: "Døpefont Middelaldersk. To lag overmaling ble fjernet i 1970-årene. Diam. 46 cm. Toppringen diam. 13,5 cm. Sideringen diam. 5,2 cm."
The font consists of four elements now: the cylindrical main body is adorned by a flat moulding, a row of semicircles with beaded insert, a moulding and a saw-tooth below; into the upper opening of the cylindrical body is a round basin of soapstone decorated with a single rope moulding; a wooden cover rests on the stone insert, and a metal baptismal dish is used atop the whole.
