Scene Description: Source caption: " St. Mariä Geburt (Baasem), Taufstein von 1559 aus einem römischen Werkstück" -- was the side drain hole made when the original stone was used as an oil mill-stone? [cf. FontNotes], or in a later re-use as farm trough?

Scene Description: Source caption: " St. Mariä Geburt (Baasem), Taufstein von 1559 aus einem römischen Werkstück" -- the irregularity of the font is obvious in this photograph; ity is quite possible that the flattened side may have been done to fit it against the wall or in a tight spot, not an uncommon fate of some fonts

There are two baptismal fonts in this church: a modern font designed by Wiethase in 1885 and an old one, said to have been re-cycled from a Roman oil mill-stone ["Ölmühle"] in 1559, later discarded, but restored to use in the church in 1976. The date 1559 inscribed on the basin side is said to represent the year when the old Roman object was re-cycled as a baptismal use.
