Ichtegem

The lower base fragment of a square mounted type of medieval font, with aither a single broad central shaft or with that and four outer colonnettes; there is a centre drain through the centre of the base. A communication from Jan Ducatteeuw to Pol Herman (e-mail of 29 September 2022, shared with BSI) includes photographs of a typical lower base of a medieval font, square on the outside and moulded for either a central shaft and four outer colonnettes, or just a central shaft; it shows a large drainage whole in the centre, and it is all that remains of the medieval font here; the communication further suggests that there may be an inscription on one of the sides of the lower base, and recommends that the fragment be placed in a safer place before it is discarded as rubble ["in bijlage twee foto's van het voetstuk van de oorspronkelijke romaanse doopvont (?) uit de Sint-Michielskerk in Ichtegem. Er zou ergens een inscriptie moeten op gegraveerd zijn, wellicht op één van de zijranden. Misschien moet aan dit stuk een bestemming worden gegeven want vroeg of laat zal als steenpuin verdwijnen". Antoon Naert's De Ichtegemse Sint-Michielskerk [https://witteke.be/onewebmedia/Erfgoedbrochure 2 - De Ichtegemse Sint-Michielskerk.pdf] [accessed 29 September 2022] reports that the present font in use in this church is 19th-century, and that there is the remains of a Romanesque sandstone font in one of the side rooms of the portal ["De huidige doopvont dateert volgens het Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium uit het eerste decennium van de negentiende eeuw en bezit een voet uit zwart marmer en een koperen deksel bekroond met een crucifix. Noch steenhouwer, noch koperslager zijn bekend. Het KIK verwijst ook naar een zandstenen doopvont met romaanse voet uit de 12de/13de-eeuw (mogelijkerwijze van de oorspronkelijke doopvont) met een kuip uit 1618. Jammer genoeg zijn hiervan geen foto’s beschikbaar [cf. ImagesArea]. De Romaanse voet staat momenteel in één van de zijkamertjes van het huidige portaal. "
