The inscription and some details of the ornamentation are noted in Épigraphie du département de Pas-de-Calais, Volume 2 (Arras, 1889) p. 35: baptismal font consisting of a round tapering basin with a band of decoration between mouldings all around the sides; this band contains an inscription identifying the priest donor, Iehan Deval; on the same band appear a set of motifs and symbols (the sun, tendrils of a vine, bunches of grapes, an Agnus Dei with a banner, as well as a shield bearing a coat of arms and, finally another inscription with Christ's monomgram and the date 1593. presumably the date of donation or memorial; the underbowl is decorated with a gadrooned pattern on which are a number of motifs and symbols, including two chalices; the top of the pedestal base is decorated with a foliate pattern, and there is another band of foliage decoration between mouldings about halfway down the stem. A simple low-dome metal cover with a round finial is on the font. The entry for this village in the Dictionnaire historique et archéologique du département du Pas-de-Calais (Arras, 1878) p. 101, reports a baptismal font in the church of Houchin made of sandstone and dated from the late 16Th century; this source also mentions that a new chapel had been donated to the church here in 1278.
