Church Notes: original church ca. 760, a mission church of the Fulda monastery, with which the town maintained a very acrimonius relationship over the rights of appointment; re-built 12thC; destroyed by fire early-19thC; re-built 1838; extensively renovated 1980s

The entry for this church in the Kirchengemeindelexikon [https://kirchengemeindelexikon.de/einzelgemeinde/dransfeld-martini/] [accessed 15 July 2022] reports that the Dransfeld baptismal font made in 1490 by Johannes von Castro was moved to the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, in Hanover. The late-medieval font is noted and illustrated in the Deutsche Inschriften Online, DI 66, Lkr. Göttingen, Nr. 73 (Sabine Wehking), in: www.inschriften.net, https://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0238-di066g012k0007304 [accessed 15 July 2022] as a baptismal font made of red sandstone for the church of St. Martini in Dransfeld; the hexagonal font appears monolithic but it is divided into two registers by a moulding that separates basin from base; on the upper register appear: 1)the three Magi; 2)the Madonna and Child; 3)St Margaret and three unidentified Apostles; 4)unidentified female saint in the midst of three unidentified Apostles; 5)St Catherine on the left, and St Martin's legend; on the lower register are: 1)St. Christopher; Christ on the Mount of Olives; 2)St George; 3)damaged figure and Flagellation; 4)a saint in pilgrim garb; crown of thorns; 5)James the Greater; carrying of the Cross?; 6)damaged figure; Crucifixion; the inscription gives the completion date of the font, the day before Easter 1490, and the name of the author, Johannes de Castro.
