Holzminden No. 1 / Holtesmeni

Noted and illustrated in the Deutsche Inschriften Online / DI 83, Landkreis Holzminden, Nr. 2 (Jörg H. Lampe und Meike Willing), in: www.inschriften.net, https://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0238-di083g015k0000208 [accessed 12 July 2022] as a baptismal font made of red sandstone, beleived to have been used as the base for the pulpit since the Reformation, having been returned to its liturgical function since 1933; it consists of a round, almost cylindrical basin decorated with a running vine below the upper rim; the rest of the side is covered in two bands of scale pattern, three rows in each band, except where floral, foliage and other motifs are inserted; the pedestal base is round and moulded. The DIO entry [cf. supra] describes the inscription as being in a sigle line but the words at different heights; the inscription, which starts on the left with a potent Greek cross and has dots as separators,is a reference to the Seven Sacraments of the Church. The same source [cf. supra] suggests that the text of the inscription may help date the font to he 13th century, after 1230 but before the Reformation.
