Century and Period: 13th century (late?), Early Gothic
Cognate Fonts: the font at the Evangelische Kirche in Münzenberg is almost identical
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to Pol Herman for bringing this font to our attention and for his help in documenting it
Church Notes: 9thC baptismal chapel; enlarged 1200; renovated 1785
Noted in Wilhelm Lotz' Kunst-topographie Deutschlands: Ein haus- und reisehandbuch für kunstler, Gelehrte, und Freunde unserer alten Kunst (Cassell, 1962: 522) as having a similar font to the one in Münzenberg [i.e., in the Evangelische Kirche]. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 24 May 2022) translates from the parish entry [https://evkirche-petterweil.de/kirche/] [accessed 24 May 2022]: "The former baptismal font from the 12th century in the church garden was removed from the church during the renovation in 1785 and then went strange ways. It came to Vilbel and was misused there at the district court as a horse drinking trough and flower trough. In 1895 this baptismal font was brought back to Petterweil. It was placed in the garden of the church. When the church garden was renovated, it was given a rondel to the left and right, and the archway and baptismal font were brought to the fore." Pol Herman, however, adds: "This baptismal font is often mentioned in 19th century books, and described as almost identical to the font of Münzenberg. I cannot believe it is 12th century." [NB: indeed; both fonts are quite likely 13th-century]. A photograph of October 2020 in the Geißener Allgemeine 23/20/2020 [https://www.giessener-allgemeine.de/wetterau/karben-ort82108/landfrauen-hoffen-70-jahr-feier-13923743.html] [accessed 9 June 2022] shows the font still in the church garden; the cover on it is probably meant to protect the font itself from the elements.
