Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Veltheim-Schulenrode [https://schulenrode.de/index.php/ueber-unsere-kirche/der-taufstein] [accessed 4 June 2022]: baptismal font of stone dated by an inscription to 1658; the inscription is carved on the sides of the octagonal basin and records the names of the donors; plain rounded ubderbowl; on an octagonal-to-square pedestal base. The same source quotes Jörg Weber (Heimatpfleger in Cremlingen) as having identified the donors as Pastor Johannes Macht (P,I DEsstEt = pastor in Destedt), who worked in Destedt and Cremlingen from 1642, with his wife Maria Hampe. The same source [cf. supra] reports the earlier presence of a baptismal font measuring 33 cm in diameter and inscribed "Hans Gerke, Ilse Ties s. ehel. Hausfraw, zu Schulenrode in die Taufe verehret Anno 1654", but this object is no longer in the church [NB: it may have been introduced during the Reformation to replace the earlier font]. Again from the same source is an interesting 1935 watercolour by Friedrich Berndt, son of the the then pastor of Cremlingen and Schulenrode; the painting shows in part the east end of the church with the magnificent 1474 retable and, on the right, the wooden pulpit; the pulpit is supported/raised on the 1658 stone font at the time ["der Taufstein für lange Zeit seiner urspünglichen Bestimmung beraubt war."]
