Scene Description: Source caption: "Gespräch am Taufstein in der Evangelisch-lutherischen Martin-Luther-Kirche Bagband zwischen Landessuperintendent Dr. Detlef Klahr (Bildmitte) und den beiden Bürgermeistern Uwe Themann (rechts), Samtgemeinde Hesel, und Olaf Meinen (links), Gemeinde Großefehn. Foto: Hannegreth Grundmann.[...]

Font Notes:
Noted in Aye, Gisela; Kronenberg, Axel C.: Taufbecken und Taufengel in Niedersachsen. Vom Ende des Dreißigjährigen Krieges bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, Regensburg 2006. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 22 May 2022) informs: "Four lion heads can be seen in the base area of the baptismal font and the basin is surrounded by tendril motifs. However, wind and water have worn away the ornaments and figures, since the old baptismal font stood as a flower pot in the Bagband parish garden from 1898 to 1986. From the 17th to the 19th century it was even used as a sink in what was then the rectory, recognizable by the drain hole. It had to give way to the new baptismal font, which can now be seen in the entrance area of the church. Only in 1986 did the old baptismal font return to the church. The baptismal font, made of Bentheim sandstone, dates back to the 13th century. It is considered to be the oldest piece of inventory in the Bagband church. Four lions are depicted in the base area. The animals - like all the other decorations - are difficult to recognize: the sandstone baptismal font is badly weathered because it stood in the parish garden for many years. In 1983 she was brought back into the Church. A well-preserved baptismal font with comparable motifs - also made of Bentheim sandstone - can be found in the church in the neighboring village of Strackholt (about two kilometers from Bagband). For baptisms in the Bagband Church, a bronze bowl is lowered into the sandstone basin. This baptismal bowl is a gift from 1635." No cover present. The metal baptismal dish in use dates from 1635.
