Font Notes:
Several objects of interest, fonts and stoups, are noted and illustrated in the article ÉVOLUTION DU MOBILIER DE L'ÉGLISE SAINT-MARTIN DE LAVOUX AU TRAVERS DE DIFFÉRENTES SOURCES D'ARCHIVES (DU XIXe au XXIe siècle), published 30 August 2017 by Les Amis du Patrimoine Lavousien [http://www.patrimoineethistoiredelavoux.com/2017/08/evolution-du-mobilier-de-l-eglise-saint-martin-de-lavoux-au-travers-de-differentes-sources-d-archives-du-xixe-au-xxie-siecle.html] [accessed 6 March 2023]; the article is signed by "Chantal Popilus avec la participation d'Alain Georgel et de Robert Granseigne", and the photographs are from the "Fonds documentaires de l'A.P.L."; the information relating to the furnishings and the re-building of the church in 19th century appear to be chiefly from Mgr Barbier de Montault's Traité pratique de la construction, de l’ameublement et de la décoration des églises selon les règles canoniques et les traditions romaines (Louis Vivès librairie éditeur, 1878), and from inventories of various dates, also documented in the above source. The baptismal illustrated in the APL article is noted as being "de marbre veiné rose et gris. De forme ovale, ce mobilier est composé de deux cuves circulaires dont une avec évacuation et de deux cuves rectangulaires. Il possède un couvercle de bois", and looking very much like an 18th- or 19th-century font consisting of an oval basin with internal partitions raised on a baluster-shaped pedestal base; the source refers to an earlier font described in the 1851 inventory: "Un baptistère en pierre de forme octogone, avec distribution en bois dans l’intérieur, couverture en bois et une croix sans Christ", which appears to indicate that, although made of stone, had an internal partition made of wood (!). Probably more interesting are two stone objects described in the source as "bénitiers" and illustrated with two 1968 photographs: "L’inventaire général du patrimoine culturel, nous montre deux photographies de 1968 de bénitiers de pierre. Ils étaient disposés dans la cour du presbytère et recyclés en cuve à plantes. Aujourd'hui, ils sont tous les deux disparus.Le premier, octogonal de la première photographie ne serait-il pas plutôt le précédent baptistère de l'église de Lavoux dont nous parle X. Barbier de Montault ? Ceci semble une hypothèse envisageable"; both objects [cf. ImagesArea] could have been originally baptismal fonts, one octagonal and with a moulded upper end, the other, round with a pattern of large scallops resembling the leaves on an artichoke; both of them are labelled as now missing: "Les deux bénitiers aujourd'hui disparus".
