Church Notes: Romanesque church replaced by present church 1850 -- listed church Inventaris Onroerend Erfgoed [no.: 37436]
Font Notes:
Listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/66899] [accessed 19 May 2022] as a 2nd-3rd century Roman stone re-carved in the 13th century [1201-1300] to be used as a bautismal font or stoup. The single block is square and measures 80 cm in height; the lower half has shallow carvings on parts of the sides; the upper half has been deeply carved and shows now the head of a bearded male semi-wrapped in a vegetable garland on one of the sides; the neck and head of a bird [an eagle?] appears on the back of the garland but the body continues down the the loweer half of the block; there are three large palmette leaves also on the sides; unlike the other carvings, which are flat around the sides one human head, male and crowned protrudes on one side. The basin is roughly round on the outside at the upper rim, but the inside is polygonal. No cover present. The entry for this church in the Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed 2022 [https://id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/37436] [accessed 19 May 2022] notes: "Merkwaardige doopvont van poreuse, geel-bruine steen, Romeins (3de eeuw ?); de ene zijde vertoont een liggend, tragisch masker op een brede guirlande van vruchten en bladeren, de andere zijde een arend met een gevleugelde bliksemschicht; bovenaan palmetten; in de 12de eeuw werd het omgevormd tot wijwatervat, met toevoeging van een maskerkop bovenaan." A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 19 May 2022) notes: "The best known (although little known) example in Belgium of a Roman object recycled as a baptismal stone, is in the Saint-Cunibert church at Diets-Heur. In French, this village is called Heur-le-Tixhe [...] Today it is used as baptismal font, but it may have been originally intended as a stoup." A further communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 24 May 2022) notes: "Following your e-mail, I contacted the people of the Gallo-Roman Museum at Tongeren, and asked them if they had more information about the recycled Roman object at the church of Diets-Heur. This is their answer : "We have no more information than what has been published in the distant past. Coincidentally, the city archaeologist of Tongeren (Dirk Pauwels, dirk.pauwels@stadtongeren.be) recently took the initiative to study this piece (or have it studied), in particular with regard to its original Roman use. For this he called upon Cathérine Coquelet, a specialist in Roman architectural sculpture elements. The investigation is still ongoing. The tentative conclusion is that prior to the Romanesque baptismal font there were two distinct Roman phases (the two relief sides are probably not contemporaneous)." [NB: this might help explain the origin of the odd carvings on the converted font]. Pol Herman provided in a new e-mail pf 5 May 2023 the link to Coquelet et al's published article noted above.
