Font Notes:
A beautiful font ["de beaux fonts baptismaux"] in this church is reported in Charles Edmond Henri de Coussemaker's Troubles religieux du XVIe siècle dans la Flandre maritime, 1560-1570, Volume 1, p. 47-48 (Bruges, 1876). Noted in Kees de Wildt's Doopvont de Beeldenstorm (2018: 114-120) as one of a number of baptismal fonts of the Westerkwartier (then part of Flanders, later in France) having been desecrated, damaged or destroyed during the Iconoclastic Fury of 1566. [NB: if the font was destroyed by 'les Gueux' in 1566 a new font would have been been made/acquired in 1567 to replace it]. The entry for this church in Pormena [http://pormenaz.free.fr/Steenwerck.php] [accessed 7 May 2022] reports: "L’église abrite des fonts baptismaux de 1567." The entry for this church in Petid Futé [https://www.petitfute.com/v26492-steenwerck-59181/c1173-visites-points-d-interet/c925-edifice-religieux/c927-eglise-cathedrale-basilique-chapelle/89300-eglise-saint-jean-baptiste.html] [accessed 7 May 2022] notes: "À l’intérieur, vous pourrez admirer les fonts baptismaux du XVIe siècle". Similar information is noted in https://flandrefrancaise.pagesperso-orange.fr/Eglises/pages_eglises/steenwerck.htm [accessed 7 May 2022]: "elle posséde des fonts baptismaux de 1567". The entry for this church in Fondation du Patrimoine [https://www.fondation-patrimoine.org/les-projets/eglise-saint-jean-baptiste-de-steenwerck] [accessed 7 May 2022] mentions a baptismal font as part of the new furnishings designed by the architect Armand Lemay for the new church: "Il la dessine sur un plan basilical comportant trois vaisseaux et commande la statuaire et un bel ensemble mobilier à Maurice Ringot, sculpteur-marbrier : de nombreuses statues, trois autels, deux stalles, des fauteuils pour les officiants, des fonds [sic] baptismaux et un chemin de croix."
