The BALaT KIK-IRPA entry for this church [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/46185] [accessed 23 April 2022] illustrates a section of the north transept wall [cf. ImagesArea] with what appear to be fragments of a former baptismal font, not identified as such in BALaT, where the date of this section is given as "1301-1400"; the left fragment shows a Tournai-style lion's head. The entry for this church in the Onroerend Erfgoed [https://inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/308] [accessed 23 April 2022] mentions only the integration of old fragments and building materials into the modern church fabric, but does not refer specifically to these font fragments. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 22 April 2022) reports "two angular fragments of a square Romanesque basin of the Tournai type, have been reused at the exterior angles of the façade of the north transept. Exposed to weather." A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 22 April 2022) noted: "The main village of the region was the gallo-roman vicus of Asse, that already had a church in the 7th century. Baardegem later became one of the 10 daughter churches of Asse. Since the title saint of the Baardegem church, Saint Margaret of Antioch in Asia Minor, became a popular saint here in the West only after the siege and capture of that city during the First Crusade, the construction of the first church is situated in the early 12th century. Originally , a small early romanesque church existed. In 1259, this church was promoted to parish church and it was enlarged in late romanesque style. Later gothic and baroque additions in the 14th, 15th and 17th century. During the restoration of the church, in September 1969, it was discovered that the choir was indeed an old pre-Romanesque hall church, probably about ten centuries old, barely five meters wide and ten meters long, the five windows of which were bricked up. Two angular fragments of a square Romanesque basin of the Tournai type, have been reused at the exterior angles of the facade of the north transept. Exposed to weather." In a later communication to BSI by Pol Herman (e-mail of 9 January 2024) Pol Herman wrote: "While on my way to the dentist, I visited the church of Baardegem. In annex, you will find pictures of both fragments of the Tournai-type font. There is also a big Romanesque head high op in the tower. I suppose it has nothing to do with the font." [cf. BSI entry for Baardegem No. 2 for the later font in this church]
