The BALaT KIK-IRPA entry for this font [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/30271] [accessed 25 April 2022] illustrates the limestone font and reports the date on the metal cover as 1698 without any indication as to the date of the font itself [cf. infra]. The BALaT entry gives Robijns, L., "Inventaris van het Kunstpatrimonium van Oost-Vlaanderen: XIV, De Sint-Martinuskerk te Aalst, II. Kunstwerken (Band 1)", in BESTENDIGE DEPUTATIE VAN DE PROVINCIALE RAAD VAN OOST-VLAANDEREN (Gent, 1980), p. 132., which dates the font to the 16th century, as reference. The large tub-shaped basin is decorated with a moulded patterns at the upper rim, and a pair of heads -one animal, one human- that are repeated around the sides; the animal heads protrude from a broad flat ribs on the sides, but the human heads are carved directly on the basin rounded surface; lower down are mouldings and claw-like motifs; the squat base is round-to-square. The large metal [brass?/copper?] cover is a moulded dome with four ball pinnacles at 90-degree angles around an uncommon orb-and-cross finial. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 24 March 2022) informs: "I visited the Sint Martinus church at Aalst, and tried to make pictures of the font. The church is in poor condition and dirty, and is currently being restored. The baptistery was not accessible and is today used for storage of building materials. The baptismal font is clearly no longer used. I took some pictures through the bars of the door. The lid carries the date 1698. I do not know whether the bluestone baptismal font dates from that same year. In the literature, it is said to be older : 16th century. My impression is that the font is 17th century. I have not seen a similar font yet." [NB: the modern church Rooms-katholieke Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Bijstandkerk, and the churches of Sint-Triden and Sint-Jozef, also in Aalst, have modern fonts in them].
