Church Notes: original wooden church; stone building ca.1100; modified 1280; brick tower ca.1300 -- listed church [Rijksmonument no.: 39623]
Noted and illustrated in the Protestantse Gemeente Uitwijk Waardhuizen [https://www.uw-kerk.nl/onze-kerk/uitwijk.html] [accessed 10 March 2022] as a Romanesque baptismal font that had served as a planter in the resident's garden; it was donated to the church at the time of the restoration [="Het doopvont is Romaans, uit zandsteen gehouwen. Dit doopvont stond oorspronkelijk bij een bewoner van Uitwijk in de tuin als bloembak. Bij de restauratie is het geschonken aan de kerk."] The font has a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a moulding around the upper rim; below runs a blind arcade of round arches supported on slender columns with capitals and bases, tapering tower the bottom of the underbowl; raised on a round pedestal base with a beautiful and uncommon diagonal pattern of three-strand interlace all around; the lower base is round-to-square, the round part decorated with a torus-scotia-torus pattern. It is quite possible that not all the parts of the font were originally together. The metal font cover appears modern. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 11 January 2024) informs about his reticence to accept this font ar face value; instead, he suggests that it may be neo-Romanesque product of the Spanish workshops that were active in the late-19th and early-20th century, exporting their ancient-looking fonts across Europe; there was no pretense or claim to undue antiquity but rather a popular fashion.
