Font Notes:
Pol Herman's communication to BSI (e-mail of 1 February 2022) notes several sources that report fragments of a blue limestone baptismal font in this church. 1) Voorloopige lijst der Nederlandsche monumenten van geschiedenis en kunst. Deel V, I. De provincie Noord-Holland (1921) reports the remains of a bluestone baptismal font on the west side of thr church. 2) Langs de oude Noordhollandse kerken, Waterland, West-Frieland, Texel, Mieke Vink-Sluis (1976), reports that during the restoration in 1965, remains of an old baptismal font emerged, which were incorporated into the current font. 3) Historisch tijdschrift Holland, 31ste jaargang, nummer 4/5, 1999, “In wintertijt in Drechterlant... Over sarcofaagdeksels, kerke en de Hollands-Friese oorlogen, Elizabeth den Hartog, page 212 4) Noord-Hollandse kerken en kapellen in de Middeleeuwen, circa 720-1200, Numan, A.M., 2005, Walburg Pers, Zutphen, page 205 5) Middeleeuwse agrarische veenontginningen in de Vier Noorder Koggen, Lisa Timmerman, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, 2017: at the church of Sijbekarspel, just like at the church of Wognum, tuff stone has been found. These stones had been incorporated at the bottom of the northern and southern entrances on both sides. During a restoration in 1965, remains of an old baptismal font and a painted piece of tuff were found. A baptismal font of bluish limestone furnished with a modern metal cover stands now [2000+ ] in this church. Is it, as soe of the sources above claim, made with fragments found here? [Pol Herman: "Work in progress. I am still searching for information about the fragments of a baptismal font that were in the church in 1921, and about the fragments that were found during the restoration of the church in 1965. It seems these fragments have been used to manufacture the font that is now standing in the church. No information yet about age, etc…] A further communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 25 July 2022) adds: "Now I have a picture of the basin before the restoration in 1965. It is a Hainaut-type late gothic font."
