Noted and illustrated in Seelsorgeeinheit Kranenburg - Niel - Wyler - Zyfflich [https://www.kirche-kranenburg.de/glauben-leben/taufe] [accessed 30 January 2022]. Werner Stalder's article Der begrabene Taufstein in RP.Online [https://rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/kleve/kranenburg-aufbecken-in-niel-wurde-erst-1965-wieder-entdeckt_aid-47980009] [accessed 30 January 2022] reports that the broken up basin of a 13th-century font was dug out in 1965 under the floor of the church; the basin was broken up into several pieces; the base of the font was not found ["Kranenburg Letzte Folge der Serie Taufsteine im Kleverland: Das Taufbecken in Niel wurde erst 1965 bei Ausschachtungsarbeiten unter dem Fußboden der Kirche wieder entdeckt. Cylindrical basin with human heads at 90-degree angles; the sides between have lion heads with palmette vegetation issuing from their mouths; raised on a modern replacement base: broad central shaft and four angle colonnettes; square lower base. Low-dome metal cover.
A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 12 January 2022) adds information from the RP [RP Rheinische Post]: According to Professor Hans Peter Hilger, the carved bluestone donr probably dates from the first half of the 13th century and was imported from the Namur area. In terms of art history, the round baptismal font can be assigned to the so-called Mosan type.
