Scene Description: the bulges on the forehead have been interpreted by some as devil's horns, but they are more likely an ornamental part of the head-dress

Remains of the octagonal basin of a 16th-century stone font decorated with four human heads at 90-degree angles on the sides, noted and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10100305] [accessed 24 January 2022]; of the two surving heads visible in our sources [cf. ImagesArea] both heads are human, one which may be described as grotesque on account of two bulges that prompted Pol Herman to describe it as "duivelskopje", a devil's head (e-mail of 23 January 2022 to BSI). The entry for this church in the Unité Pastorale d'Alleur-Awans [http://upalleurawans.be/fooz] accessed 24 January 2022] notes: "Les fonts baptismaux, de style gothique, retrouvés dans les jardins du presbytère, datent du XVIème siècle et seraient une pièce subsistante de la chapelle primitive." A communication from Christophe Baldewyns, of Awans, Belgium, to Pol Herman (e-mail of 26 January 2022) contains an update on the present status of the restored font "Les fonts ont été sortis du jardin et placés dans la nef de l’église sur un socle. Il est en parfait état" and two photographs of the object. A further communication from Pol Herman regarding the baptismal font at Marcq, in Hainaut, suggests some similarity with this font, except that this basin is octagonal whereas Marcq is round [NB: the two fonts, Marcq and Fooz, no doubt share some similarities, especially in some details of the heads; there are however notable differences inclding the outer shape of the basins -round vs. octagonal- and the time period to which they belong: 13th vs 16th century]
