Blitterswijck No. 1 / Blitterswik

A baptismal font made of oak in the 17th century, topped with a font cobver made of copper also in the 17th century is reported in Voorloopige lijst der Nederlandsche monumenten van geschiedenis en kunst. Deel VIII, II. De provincie Limburg (Meerloo-Zwalmen), 1926. It is probably the same font shown in a 1926 B&W photograph in the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Doopvont_-_Blitterswijk_-_20035829_-_RCE.jpg] [accessed 20 January 2022]. The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin covered with palmette pattern all around, the underbowl decorated with a gadrooned pattern; the base is very short, moulded and with a row of balls; stands on a square lower base or plinth with top and bottom mouldings. The metal cover is domed with four patterned mouldings, topped with a functional handle; no finial. This font would have been destroyed when the tower was blown up and much of the church damaged in WWII [cf. ImagesArea]. The entry for this church in Kerkgebouwen in Limburg [https://www.kerkgebouwen-in-limburg.nl/kerken/blitterswijck/ol-vrouw-geboorte] [accessed 20 January 2022] describes a baptismal font, obviously a modern one: "Doopvont staat op een vierkante sokkel, de vont rust op een ronde voet met zware parelrand en aan de onderzijde van de kuip bewerkt met een staande knorrenrand, daarboven over de gehele hoogte staande palmbladeren. Het geelkoperen deksel is wijd klokvormig en heeft langs de onderrand een tekstband: UIT ONZE IXOYS JEZUS CHRISTUS IN HET WATER GEBOREN. Boven zeven gedreven vissen en een kruisje in de top.
