Scene Description: "one of the clandestine churches from the time of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The Reformed Church was the so-called 'official church' in the Netherlands. Other religions were tolerated, but were required to refrain from public display. Non-Reformed people gathered in churches that were not recognizable as such. Those were hidden church buildings" [cf. The entry for this church in Reliwiki [https://reliwiki.nl/index.php/Krommenie,_Noorderhoofdstraat_131_-_Nicolaas] [accessed 26 December 2021] notes a baptismal font made of marble in the mid-17th century. Only the basin and its squat base are of marble; the moulded stand appears to be made of painted (white) wood. It has a metal cover of approximately the same shape as the basin, with a cross finial. Pol Herman, in a communication to BSI (e-mail of 13 December 2021) informs that this was one of the clandestine churches from the time of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The Reformed Church was the so-called 'official church' in the Netherlands. Other religions were tolerated, but were required to refrain from public display. Non-Reformed people gathered in churches that were not recognizable as such. Those were hidden church buildings.
