Baptismal font made of Mosan limestone in 1519-1520, and originally from the demolished church of Sint-Catharinakerk, Riel. Octagonal moulded basin on an octagonal pedestal base, the lower base transitioning to square. Brass dome cover.
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 8 December 2021) notes: "Octagonal Mosan limestone font, gothic, 1519-1520.
Provenance of the font : disappeared Sint-Catharinakerk, Riel
Location : https://reliwiki.nl/index.php/Riel,_Kerkstraat_-_Catharina
In 1444, a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria was built in Riel. In 1520 Riel split off as a new parish. The chapel became a parish church. In 1629 the church had to be closed, after which mass was celebrated in the rectory. In 1641 it had become too unsafe and the pastor left. Until 1673 it was forbidden to practice the Catholic faith. In 1819 the old church came back into the possession of the Catholics and they re-opened it in 1822. In 1897, the new neo-Gothic church, Antonius Abtkerk, was inaugurated, which was completed in 1895. The old Saint Catherine's Church was demolished in 1897. Present font dates from 1519, when the church was built."
