Church Notes: A chapel was built on Sterksel in 1211 by order of Rome. In 1220 there is talk of a presbytery of Sterkselse van Averbode. Nothing more is known about this building. It probably already stood on the site of the later chapels, which is the current cemetery. In 1645 the chapel in Sterksel was badly damaged but was rebuilt. The chapel was eventually demolished around 1846. In 1866 it was decided to build a new chapel in Sterksel [source: Pol Herman (e-mail of 7 December 2021)]

The entry for H. Catharina kapel van Sterksel in Erfgoed Wiki [https://www.erfgoedgeowiki.nl/index.php/H._Catharina_kapel_van_Sterksel] [accessed 17 December 2021] reports that the Sterkselse chapel did not receive permission from the bishop of Liège to install a baptismal font until 1562, without the chapel then becoming a parish church [...] a fragment of this baptismal font has been preserved in the garden of Huize Sterksel. The same information appears in 750 jaar geschiedenis van de parochie Sterksel, 1211-1961, in Heemkronijk jaar:1996, jaargang:35, nummer:2, pag:72 -86 [https://www.heemkundekring-hlz.nl/heemkronijken/item/711/750-jaar-geschiedenis-van-de-parochie-sterksel-1211-1961-1] [accessed 17 December 2021]; an illustration in this source shows a fragment identified in the caption as "Doopvont van de St.-Catharinakapel, zoals aangetroffen in the tuin van Huize Sterksel (zie blz. 80)"; the fragment appears to be part of a stone basin.
