The basin of a baptismal font said to be originally from the Sint-Lievens-Monsterkerk in Zierikzee, claimed by some sources to be made of Bentheimer sandstone. Pol Herman, in a communication to BSI (e-mail of 2 December 2021) provided the following information: Source : various articles in local newspapers. 1987 : At the beginning of this year, a medieval baptismal font was placed in the church just in front of the baptismal garden. Hewn from Bentheimer stone, it has a traditional design for the Middle Ages, round with an octagonal finish at the top. This baptismal font is said to have come from the Sint-Lievens-Monsterkerk that burned down in 1832. The story goes that it later ended up in a bakery, where the baker used it as a mortar. He crushed the almonds in it with a heavy stone. When the bakery was transferred, the baptismal font came into the possession of Marinus van Felius, a gardener and florist in the Paardenstraat at the time. It was first used as a flower box and later it served as a swimming bowl for goldfish. Felius' family determined that the baptismal font had to be returned to the Reformed Church at a later date. It was removed from the garden in 1985. Because the new church building is no longer owned by the municipality, the baptismal font, with the knowledge of Felius' family, now ended up in the Gasthuiskerk. The support of the basin, made in natural stone, has been completely selflessly manufactured by a local stone mason. Quite apart from the question of whether this historical object, in itself valuable, is located in the most suitable place here, it is a pity that a more suitable material was not chosen for the support -- and comment: "If the font is made of Bentheimer stone (as several authors state), then it is certainly of a totally different style than the usual Bentheimer fonts." Also, it is far outside the distribution area of Bentheimer fonts. There is also a modern wooden font in this church [cf. ImagesArea]
