A communication from Pol Herman (e-mail of 24 November 2021) includes the baptismal fonts at Charneux, Sprang, Maasmechelen, Munsterbilzen, Tongerlo and Waanrode as somewhat similar examples of Mosan font design.
A further communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 29 January 2026) adds: "Carnoto, Carnoit, Charnoit. The church of Charneux is the oldest subsidiary of the parish of Herve. Around 1300, a single-nave chapel already existed, which was elevated to parish status around 1380.
Archives document the blessing of the Gothic chancel in 1443. The massive western tower and the central nave date from the mid-15th century.
1552: the nave dedicated to the Virgin Mary was erected. The church was reconsecrated on June 12, 1616. Two building campaigns gave the structure its current appearance: the first around 1640, adding the nave dedicated to Saint Sebastian; the second, thanks to Father Nicolas Ernolet (1727-1757), with the renewal of the vault. Baptismal records start 1764. Octagonal, limestone, Mosan font. With four heads. Unusual column, probably remodelled. Concerning the date : KIK-IRPA writes 16th c. However... the shape of the basin refers to the intermediate design in between the late-Romanesque bowl-type basins and the fully gothic octagonal basins with flat panels; on 16th century fonts, the profiles at the rim of the basin are much more pronounced. The heads look archaic. This is not the style of heads sculpted in the 16th c. It is much easier to compare the font of Charneux with those early-gothic ones of Musterbilzen, Borgloon, Larrelt, Louches, Tongerlo, Waanrode, Bioul, Ulbeek, Maasmechelen and others. I am fully aware of the sometimes questionable dating by authorities and literature. I simply added the dates of above fonts, and divided by nine : 1334. My hypothesis : this is the original font of 1380, when the parish was created. https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10100065 -- Baroque stoup, red marble, with gadroons https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10100063"
