Church Notes: monastery Succursus Dominae Nostrae founded 1230 by/for Cistercian nuns; damaged and raided in the wars of religion; re-built 1660-1680 but went into distress until 1790 when it is turned to secular canons, only to be dismantled in 1794 by republican troops and the villagers themselves; church demolished 1805; a religious community re-occupies the abbey ruins in 1887 and it is restored 1892; the church is re-built first in 1900 and later in 1993; damaged by fire in 2010
A communication from Pol Herman (e-mail of 13 November 2021) mentions three somewhat similar baptismal fonts at Rochefort (Belgium), Ammerstol (Netherlands) and Souppes-sur-Loing (France). The font outside the main entrance of the abbey church consists of a hemispherical basin with protruding figures [Apostles?] all around, raised on a cylindrical pedestal base decorated with torsade pattern; the lower end with roll mouldings. It appears to be identical to the one list in BSI for Souppes-sur-Loing, in Seine-et-Marne (France) mentioned above. It is not mentioned of listed in BALaT KIK-IRPA. An 18th-19th century holy-water stoup in this church is listed in BALaT KIK-IRPA [B174880] [http://balat.kikirpa.be/photo.php?path=B174880&objnr=10115331&nr=95] [accessed 15 November 2021]. A further communication from Pol Herman (e-mail to BSI of 27 November 2021) informs of a very similar holy water font that was recently sold at auction for 2.000 Euro [http://www.brissonneau.net/lot/15628/2812935?npp=150&] [accessed 22 August 2022]: "BÉNITIER en pierre de style Roman. Les douze apôtres sont représentés en haut relief sur la panse. Leurs costumes sont semblables mais leurs mains sont toutes en postures différentes et tiennent une bible. Traces de concrétions dans la cuve. Diam: 50cm. H: 30cm. On y joint un socle en pierre qui pourrait être un chapiteau et un morceau de colonne torsadée."
