Font Notes:
A fragment of a human head, probably from a 13th-14th century baptismal font, found buried in the ground is noted and illustrated in \: "Werkput 4B. Fragment van een stenen kop. Datering 13de-14deeeuw, vermoedelijk deel van een doopvont. Afm. circa 12x13 cm. Foto Amsterdams Archeologisch Centrum, Universiteit van Amsterdam". Inventoried and illustrated in the Collectie Huis van Hilde entry [http://collectie.huisvanhilde.nl/?query=Records/relatedid=[Object54740]&label=Zoekopdracht&showtype=record] [accessed 4 November 2021] as a fragment, a part of a head, of a baptismal font of the 13th or 14th century; discovered in Engelmunduskerk, Velsen-Zuid, Velsen. [NB: the church has a modern stone font in use now [2009]. A further communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 11 March 2022) raises some issues with the remains at Velsen-Zuid: "Concerning Velsen, there is more to say. The face of the head, attributed to a 13/14th century font at the Egelmunduschurch of Velzen-Zuid is a first fragment. I sent it to you on 30th of October [2021]. But as you can see on page 113 of the annexed document, another fragment has been found during excavation of the graveyard around the church (picture 28, a to c). It clearly is a fragment of a gothic Mosan bluestone font (or stoup) with 4 heads. The ear on this Velsen-fragment reminds me of the ear on the Maasbree-fragment. Usually gothic heads have no ears. I do not understand why it is classified under the heading “Objects not directly related to the church building”. And lastly, on the website of the Noord-Hollands Archief.nl in the image bank “De Boer”, there are pictures dated 12th of September 1974 that show a badly damaged basin at “Oud Velsen”. However, when I compare the interior of the church photographed on the same day, with the interior of the church at Velsen, I begin to suspect that there is something wrong here. I have not been able to identify such basin at Velsen. Not the end of the story, I hope." [cf. BSI entry for Velsen-Zuid No.2]
