The Archeologie Gorinchem entry 'Doopvont uit burcht spoorloos' [https://www.archeologiegorinchem.com/projectenoverzicht/wijdschild-burcht-van-de-arkels-1996/13de-eeuwse-doopvont-uit-burcht-spoorloos/] [accessed 2 November 2021] notes: "The Gorinchem Archeology Working Group is looking for the baptismal font from the castle of the lords Van Arkel. The 13th century stone trough appeared in 1977 during the construction of a house north of the Dalemsedijk. “A shopkeeper from Gorcum acquired this thing and used it as a feeding trough for his animals,” explains Martin Veen of the working group. “Herman Bos photographed that baptismal font on that man's farm in the early 1980s for the book “Gorinchem, 600 years in a bird's eye view”. That's the only image that exists. It has been missing since then.” That Gorcumer has since passed away; his family unfortunately did not know the baptismal font and has no idea where it has gone.” Veen hopes to be able to trace the stone baptismal basin. “From a historical point of view, it would be nice if we could find it again. We are currently working on a publication about the castle, in which we highlight the finds we made in 1996 as a working group on the south side of the dike. In 1977 no importance was attached to archeology, says Martin Veen. [NB: the original church here was mid-13th century; it is not known whether the old basin dug up in 1977 is the font from the old church here].
