Kyrkan har anor från medeltiden men har under tidernas lopp genomgått flera om- och tillbyggnader. 1757 omgestaltades kyrkans grundligt.1857 genomgick byggnaden en omfattande renovering. Blomqvist (1929) mentions an early wooden church here but not a font. Borg (2002) has two entries for limestone font fragments from this church kept in the Kalmar Slott museum; those fragments seem to match a baptismal font shown in an old [undated] B&W photograph by Otto Janse, in the Kulturmiljöbild, Riksantikvarieämbetet [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ljungby_kyrka_-_KMB_-_16000200084482.jpg] [accessed 4 October 2021] [cf. ImagesArea FileNo.: 0211004024]; the font shows a basin with an octagonal upper half and a round tapering underbowl; the base is made of two blocks of quatrefoil shape; neithe basin nor base show a drain in them. Borg (ibid.) identifies the material as Gotland limestone and gives the dates of early-14th century for the basin but mid-13th for the base. Not listed in the SHM. The Kalmar läns Museum [https://digitaltmuseum.se] [accessed 4 October 2021] has separate entries for the two parts (basin and base), and provides a transliteration of the remaining inscription on the basin upper sides: "...ERIT ET BABTATUS FUERIT SALV...RIT CONDEMNABITUR". The present baptismal font in this church is modern, acquired in 1988.
