Square mounted font of the Tournai type but with single base support. Cloquet (1895) [NB: spells the placename "Deflinghem] Square mounted font of the Tournai type but with single base support. Cloquet (1895) describes it as decorated with simple geometric ornaments and points out the characteristic reinforcements of the base, which establish the link with the traditional 5-support bases fonts of the Tournai workshops. His illustration (Cloquet, 1890, p. 416) shows a square mounted font with a base like that of the Gallaix font, i.e., a central broad column, without corner colonnettes; the places where these corner colonnettes would have fit, at the underbowl and lower base, are now ornamented with broad leaves, a fact that Cloquet uses to argue that this is a transitional type from the traditional five-column base of the Tournai fonts to the later "monopédiculé" type. The sides of the basin are decorated with a saw-tooth motif with half-ball incrustation. Noted in the Onroerend Erfgoed [https://inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/74211] [accessed 21 September 2021]: "Romaanse doopvont in blauwe hardsteen, uit de 12de of 13de eeuw." The font, made of a black-blue limestone, consists of a square basin raisend on a cylindrical pedestal base and a round-to-square lower base; very little decoration on it: a narrow band of geometrical motifs (saw-tooth and arch-heads) on the basin sides, and large leaves on the corners of the lower base. The basin has had an old metal brace installed all around it. Two covers are shown on it: a very flat dome with a handle and a more elegant one made of hammered metal with a Latin-cross finial; they both appear modern.
