Pol Herman writes [e-mail communication of 5 September 2021 to BSI]: "You can find many heads integrated in the outer walls of churches, like at Steenkerque." The entry for this church in Open Churches [https://openchurches.eu/fr/edifices/saint-martin-braine-le-comte] [accessed 20 September 2021] notes: "Les petites têtes sur les façades. Au-dessus de la fenêtre de l'entrée, une petite tête sort du mur. Son amie fait de même quelques mètres plus haut. Enfin, une troisième veille également sur les environs, accrochée à la tourelle d'escalier du clocher. Ce sont des évangélistes, mais le quatrième a malheureusement disparu. Symbolisant la Bonne Nouvelle, leurs têtes ornaient des fonts baptismaux très anciens, remontant au XIIe siècle, ou peut-être même plus loin encore." The three heads are built into the west side of the tower; the fourth head from the 12th(?) century font is missing.
