Font Location in Church: Inside the new church, in the N transept
Date: ca. 1200? [basin only]
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century [basin only], Medieval / composite
Church Notes: wooden church believed to have existed around the same site of the present church in the Viking period; an 'encolpion' shaped as a cross believed to have belonged to that early church; later church with nave and tower in the 12thC; tower collapsed 1728; church restored 1741; old church demolished and new church built 1864; new church restored 1930s
The entry for Uppåkra inTynell (1913-1921) reports that the font font from its medieval church is missing, and that the only related object in the 1830 inventory is a baptismal dish; the entry gives a reference to an unknown church in the same page, a reference to the basin of a sandstone font found in a farm in nearby Hunnerup; that object is described as having been moved to the garden of Lund's hospital [cf. SHM entry infra]. Monica Rydbeck took a photograph of the Uppåkra font [cf. ImagesArea, ImageFileNo. 0210820005] but does not mention it in her 1936 book. A new church replaced the demolished medieval one in approximately the same site; the new church has two medieval fonts: one, now on the south side, from nearby Flackarp [cf. BSI entry] and another, now on the north side, from the demolished medieval church at Uppåkra. The font said to be from the earlier church here or to have been found in a Hunnerup farm and later moved to Lund Hospital [cf. Tynell supra] is noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 950627F3] as the basin of a font made of sandstone ca. 1200 by a regional workshop; the SHM entry reports the granite base as a modern replacement, and cites Tynell's source and past locations. No cover present. Early-18th century baptismal dish.
