INFORMATION

FontID: 23408TJO
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Church/Chapel: Tjörnarps nya kyrka
Church Location: [NB: address & coordinates for the old church] Tjörnarps gamla kyrka [kyrkoruin], Kyrkvägen, Tjörnarp, 243 71 Höör, Sweden
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Skåne, Skåne län
Directions to Site: The ruins of the old church are located on Kyrkvägen, off (SW) local road M1328, W of highway 23, in the municipality and 8-10 km NE of Höör. The new church is about 300 yds from the ruins of the old one
Ecclesiastic Region: Lunds Stift
Font Location in Church: Inside the new church
Date: ca. 1200?
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Genarpsgruppen [Tynell] / palmettgruppen [Rydbeck, SHM]
Cognate Fonts: [cf. FontNotes]
Church Notes: new church of 1864 replaced the medieval (12thC?) church located on a site about 300 yards from the new one; old church demolished; only some ruins remain, but some parts were reconstructed in the 1960s -- the medieval font was moved to the new church
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921) as a baptismal font of the 'Genarpsgruppen', somewhat similar to the font in Träne [cf. BSI entry], made of sandstone. Noted in Rydbeck (1936) in her section on the palmette fonts. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900623F2] as a 'palmettgruppen' baptismal font made of sandstone ca. 1200; the SHM entry reports added marbling and oil paint on it. No cover present. Described in the web page of the Höörs pastorat [www.svenskakyrkan.se/hoor/hoor.html] as a baptismal font of the 12th century brought in from the old church; similar to the one in the neighbouring church of Höör. Noted and illustrated as a baptismal font of the 12th century originally from the old church here, decorated with palmette pattern in Sveriges Hembygdsförbund [www.bygdeband.se/?post_type=attachment&p=2296137] [accessed 24 August 2017]; this same source identifies the large baptismal dish [="dopfatet"] as having been made of brass in 1636, while the smaller one is from 1877. The roughly hemispherical basin has a briad band of palmette pattern all around with a rope moulding right below; the underbowl has a shallow pattern of ribs that look rather like gadroons; round-to-square base with a moulding at the neck and leaves (?) at the corners lower down. One side of the font shows considerable damage. No cover present. This font, as suggested in the entry above, somwhat similar to the one in the church at nearby Höör, although the palmette design is slightly differenet and there is an additional rope moulding above the foliage band at Höör.
