INFORMATION

FontID: 23390IBB
Church/Chapel: Sankt Ibbs gamla kyrka
Church Patron Saints: St. James
Church Location: Kyrkbacken, 260 13 Sankt Ibb, Sweden -- Tel.: +46 418 574 00
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Skåne, Skåne län
Directions to Site: Located off local road M1354 [aka Kyrkvägen], on the NW side of Ven island, in the Øresund, in the municipality of Landskrona
Ecclesiastic Region: Lunds Stift
Historical Region: Rönnebergs härad
Font Location in Church: Inside the church by the N pillar of the chancel arch
Century and Period: 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Dalslandsgruppen [SHM]
Church Notes: 13thC church; modified 15thC; tower demolished 1726; abandoned 19thC and new church built in the middle of the island; old church re-dedicated 1939
Described and illustrated as a baptismal font on unknown material in a style related to Smaalenene in Norway. In Rydbeck (1936) after Tynell. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900629F4] as a 'Dalslandsgruppen' baptismal font made of soapstone in the 13th century, the only soapstone font in Skåne, a material found in Dalsland and other western counties of Sweden and with similar fonts in Norway; the outer surfaces of the font are coated in oil-based paint; the inner basin is lined with brass. The basin has a metal brace around its outer middle, but it is not obvious why that would be there unless it was as a reinforcement. A later (17th-century?) wooden cover appeared on the font in early photographs [cf. ImagesArea], an octagonal cake-shaped base with eight scroll ribs and a figural finial; the ca. 1900 photographs show the cover detached and placed directly on the font, but it is now hanging from the ceiling by the north pillar of the chancel arch; painted; it is placed directly above the font and may be raised and lowered by a pulley. There are two metal baptismal dishes; an early one of decorated brass resembling many such of Dutch or German manufacture in Swedish churches, hangs on the north wall behind the font; the other baptismal dish appears modern, of a gun-metal colour. [NB: the old church was abandoned for a time when a new church was cosntructed on a new site, the new building known as Sankt Ibbs Nya kyrka or Allhelgonakyrkan; curiously the new church itself lost popularity and the old church recovered its use so that by 1195 the new church was closed for cult and became a museum; by that time the olf church had been restored as the parish church].
