Baptismal font noted in Tynell (1913–21) as a baptismal font made of sandstone; Tynell (ibid.) mentions an inscription on this font but gives no transcription of it. Blennow (2014) [www.academia.edu/16982944/Inskriften_på_den_medeltida_dopfunten_i_Ausås_kyrka_läst_och_identifierad] [accessed 1 June 2021] informs that Tynell's attribution of this font to the Mörarpsmästaren, who made the fonts in Össjö, Munka-Ljungby, Mörarpoch Rya is unlikely, and disagrees with it, as the fonts of that group tend to be four sided and bearing decoration. Blennow (ibid.) studies the inscription below the upper rim of this font, an inscription which is missing many letters and has others reversed or upside down, and gives an edited transcription of it [cf. InscriptionArea]; she further notes that the inscription is a known medieval antiphon from medieval manuscripts and that it corresponds in the octave of the Epiphany as included on Pope Gregrory I [she gives Patrologia latina (vol. 78, col. 0743C, as source). Blennow provides an English translation: ”The Baptist trembled and dares not touch the holy head of God, but cries fearfully: Bless me, Saviour!” This author suggests that it is very likely that, given the lack of decoration on this font, that French Cistercian monks who were established in a monastery a few miles east of Ausås by the mid-12th century were probably responsible for the font and its inscription. No entry for this font found in the SHM's database. Brass baptismal dish donated to the church 1890s. Noted and illustrated in Karl Johan Kember's Ausås kyrka [www.bebyggelseregistret.raa.se/bbr2/show/bilaga/showDokument.raa;jsessionid=5AE0CBE0B7AC94A5DFE68CFC3E24B6C5?dokumentId=21000001834145&thumbnail=false] [accessed 2 June 2021] with reference to Blennow's description and comments above. Close ups of the base of this font [cf. ImagesArea] show that there are further details of interes on it; the four knob-like protrusions on the upper area of the base are actually carvings broken off, except for one of them, which has survived [NB: not certain what they are (eroded heads? plain knobs?)]; there is also an area on the lower base which has a large notch cut out of the stone; is it for the drain, as sometimes appears on Scandinavian fonts? No cover present.
