Century and Period: 12th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: medieval church demolished 1825; new church 1826; restored 1937-1938;
Noted and illustrated in Hallbäck (1966) as the plain basin of a baptismal font made of sandstone in Västergötland in the English style around the year 1200; on a new base/plinth [NB: the photograph in Hallbäck's book does not show a base]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920705F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the 12th century; the SHM entry notes that the font is weathered overall and that the match of the bottom of the basin and the top of the base is awkward. No cover present. [NB: the shape of the base appears to be slightly different in two of the sources [cf. ImagesArea] but it may be the result of the angle of the photograph if the base is irregular around the sides; the SHM photograph shows a round-to-octagonal base]. A second font, appearing in a digital image [2200-005.tif] of an undated B&W photograph in the Kulturmiljöbild, Riksantikvarieämbetet [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Östra_Frölunda_kyrka_-_KMB_-_16001000013572.jpg] [accessed 22 March 2021] is a strange-looking object being captioned Östra Frölunda kyrka [...] Dopfunt, romansk [...] Rik ornamentering på cuppa och fot." This second font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin crowded with many motifs and symbols (saw-tooth, crosses of various shapes inscribed in shield-like shapes) and a round splaying base with a pattern of quadrangular frames; one of the sides appears damaged and repaired; if the font is medieval it must have been done by a local hand -- we have no information on the provenance or present location].
