view of base in context

Scene Description: Source caption: "Toarps kyrka [...] Sten, möjligen dopfuntsfot, funnen vid schaktning på kyrkogården." -- according to Hallbäck (1966) the basin of a medieval font was recovered after more than a century of disuse in the churchyard and restored to the church in 1904; the base, however was discovered in a bog west of the church in 1942 and was restored to the church at a later date -- the image here shows the medieval base after its discovery, but the caption appears to contradict the details of its recovery as given by Hallbäck [cf. supra]

Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Hallbäck (1966) and (1971) as a baptismal font of the late-12th century attributed to master Andreas; it had been disused in the churchyard for more than a century; when found, the basin was restored to the church in 1904; the base was discovered in a bog west of the church in 1942 and was equally restored to the church. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920609F6] as a baptismal font made of sandstone ca. 1200 by a regional workshop; the SHM entry indicates that a significant part of the basin has been lost at the top -cut and sanded- perhaps as much as 5 cm; it also notes that the base was much damaged and has been repaired with cement [cf. ImagesArea]; the SHM acknowledges Hallbäck's attribution to the Andreas workshop but obviously disagrees with the attribution, suggesting instead that it was the product of a regional workshop. The baptismal font consists of a roughly cylindrical basin the has lost its upper rim [cf. SHM supra], the sides covered in a 2-strand linked-circle pattern; the underbowl has a flat-ribbed (almost concave) ribbing pattern all around; the base is hemispherical, the broader side to the ground; a photograph taken at the time of its discovery shows it had a central drain channel through it. No cover present.
