Church Notes: a document signed 15 September of the year 800 reads "En el lugar de Burceña, en territorio de Mena, yo Vitulo, abad, y Ervigio, presbitero, edificamos con nuestras manos la basílica de san Esteban"; much modified since [source: [www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.662178503801059.1073741833.443134689038776&type=3] [accessed 17 January 2021]]
The present baptismal font in this church consists of a round tapering basin decorated with a crude and irregular ribbed pattern all around; it is raised on a squat round base and on a wide two-step circular plinth, the lower part of it semi-buried in the ground; the back of the basin shows a large vertical damage now repaired. The flat and plain wooden font cover is modern. [NB: if the church was indeed founded in the year 800, as the foundation document mentioned in ChurchNotes claims, it would have had a font of that period in it; we have no information available on its whereabouts].
