Font Notes:
L. Serrano's Fuentes para la historia de Castilla (t. 1, 2012: 102fn.) notes that there were two parochial churches with baptismal fonts in Palenzuela [="Las iglesias de Palenzuela con pila o parroquiales eran dos: San Juan y Santa Eulalia."]. [NB: we have no information on the medieval baptismal font of this church]. There are two holy-water stoups here, an identical (?) pair; they are made of stone in the 16th century by Bartolomeo Carlone and Angelo Begut. The stoup consists of a round basin deeply carved with cherub head, mouldings and concave ribs, raised on a round baluster pedestal base decorated with fluted and foliage patterns; a half-dome cover, also of stone and resembling a shell is decorated with fat putti or cherubs and several skulls; between the two putti is a cartouche bearing an inscription but it is not clear from the sources whether the two have the same inscription, and what the inscription is; the plaque situated next to one of the stoups gives the inscription as "Mors lucra" = "Morir es ganar". [NB: Bartolomeo Carlone was a late-17thC architect from the prolific Carlone family of northern Italy; Bartolomeo [aka Bartolomé] worked on many Spanish monuments and buildings, including El Escorial -- Angelo Bagut [probably from the Lombardic family Baguti] was also an architect of the same period who worked in Spain, at times jointly with Carlone on a number of assignments, some of them in Palenzuela [[for the Carlone family cf. the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon -- for the Carlone-Bagut joint work cf. Rosa Lopez Torrijos' "Angelo Bagut e Bartolomeo Carlone" y "Giovanni e Bartolomeo da Lugano" [https://ebuah.uah.es/dspace/handle/10017/7322] [accessed 5 January 2021]].
