There are three entries for this Norton in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE7971/norton/], one of which reports a church in it. Noted in Leonard Stanley Rivett's A History of and Guide to St. Peter's Church, Norton - Juxta - Malton, Yorkshire (Norton: [The Church], 1964). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE7942771029] notes: "Church. 1889-91. [...] Cll square font with blind arcading on a cylindrical pedestal with roll moulded foot." The font here is noted and illustrated by Rita Wood in the CRSBI [www.crsbi.ac.uk/view-item?i=3005] [accessed 27 November 2020]: "There is a modern square plinth. On this is: a square chamfered base, a heavy torus; a plain cylinder or column less high than wide; another heavy torus, and a larger one. On this stem is a square font. The four faces each have two blank arches, crisply but shallowly cut in two levels with capitals having a hollow chamfer and the bases shown as two rectangular steps. The angles of the block have a rounded moulding; the top and bottom of the sides have a plain band with a medial quirk - an accurate straight line. The top surface is plain with a circular bowl, rebated and lead-lined. From the damage to parts of the supporting structure of the font, and from its similar colour of stone to the bowl, it might be supposed that the whole item, above the modern square plinth, was given by Mrs Wightman in 1894. Similar arcading is cut in a less measured manner on a cylindrical font at East Ayton (YN), and other places." The entry for this church in Explore Churches [www.explorechurches.org/church/st-peter-norton-derwent] [accessed 28 November 2020] notes: "The stone font is a massive and impressive piece, probably 12th century, but because of some damage is mounted on a modern base. It is known to be the font of the medieval church, thrown out in 1814 but kept by someone as a garden ornament. It was returned to St Peters in 1894."
