Church Notes: originally a Visigothic hermit cove of the 5th-6thC; monastery 6thC+; Mozarabic monastery 10thC; set in fire by Almanzor 1003; restored by Sancho III of Navarre 1030; expande and modified 11th and 12thC; productive scriptorium in it (famous Beatus)
Font Notes:
Baptismal font of a composite nature; the basin is roughly hemispherical and has a deeply-carved acanthus vine all around its side between two mouldings; the underbowl is carved with broad diagonal ribs, also deeply carved; the pedestal base is of a much later date, of round baluster shape, standing on a tiny quadrangular lower base or plinth. No cover resent but one of the rim sides of the basin has been cut to accommodate a lock.
