INFORMATION

FontID: 22966HYS
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Church/Chapel: Hyssna gamla kyrka
Church Location: [NB: address and coordinates are for the old church] Bollebygdsvägen 9, 510 22 Hyssna, Sweden
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Västergötland, Västra Götalands län
Directions to Site: Located off (E) road 156, N of Hajom, in the municipality and to the N of Mark
Ecclesiastic Region: Göteborgs stift
Historical Region: Marks härad
Font Location in Church: Inside the church [cf. FontNotes]
Century and Period: 13th century, Late Romanesque
Church Notes: meideval church of the 12thC; became diused in 1910 after the building of the new church here; was renovated 1922-19123; it is used only on special occasions for weddings and baptisms -- the new church was built in 1907; restored 1936, 1967
Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Hallbäck (1966) as a baptismal font made in the middle- or late-13thC; the basin is identified as being of Västergötland sandstone, the work of a local mason imitating the one at Hajom; the basin has a band of acanthus vine below the upper rim; the basin sides and underbowl are divided into partitions: 1) a rampant crowned lion holding a sword; 2) a lily; 3) a lily; 4) human figure under lily; 5) human figure showing hands; 6) a lily; 7) human with clasped hands seated beneath a cross; 8) a lily; 9) motifs with cross; 10) human with clasped hands seated beneath a cross; no drainage; the base is identified as being Gotland limestone and consisting of two parts: a narrow cylindrical stem with a roll moulding atop, and a splaying circular lower base below. Much damaged. No cover present. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 950829F1] as a provincial work of the 13th century; the SHM entry remarks that the three blocks that make up the font come from three different original fonts; it also notes that the basin, which has some similarities with the one at Hajom [cf. supra], belongs to the SHM but has been on loan to the old church since the 1990s. [NB: where Hallbäck [cf. supra] describes the font as being in three parts [="i tre delar"] the SHM entry reports it in as two-part; the images from both sources may account for the difference [cf. ImagesArea], as the SHM photograph shows the base, stem and lower base, as one, whereas the early photographs appear to show that the stem and lower base are separate blocks; perhaps broken?]. The baptismal font in the new church is contempporary with it, of painted wood.
