Old Testament - reconnaissance of Canaan (Numbers 13-14) - return with produce of the land

Scene Description: Hallbäck [cf. FontNotes] identifies the scene here as the return of the Israelite scouts sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan, as directed by the Lord in Numbers 13:17ff; the scene refers specifically to 13:23: "And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs."

Font Notes:
Noted in Hallbäck (1971) as a the surviving basin of a medieval baptismal font of sandstone; the original base is missing; the basin is roughly cylindrical and has, according to Hallbäck (ibid.) a single relief scene showing the scouts returning from the land of Canaan, carrying a bunch of grapes between them on a pole (Num. 13:24), a motif, the author notes, completely unique to western Sweden; the upper rim is deecorated with a rope moulding; the author additionally remarks that the font is reminiscent of those from Denmark. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920521F5] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the late-12th century; the SHM entry adds Hallbäck's identification of the scene with a question mark. There is a modern baptismal font in use in this church, located at the southeast corner of the nave; the re-mounted old basin is displayed in the porch [vapenhuset] together with other old stonework.
