Church Notes: a Cistercian monastery built here in 1194, a daughter house of the Sorø monastery in Denmark; closed and later destroyed in 1535; legend has that the last abbot at Ås kloster became the first parish priest in Ås; the present church was built farther inland in the Middle Ages, much modified and re-built since [NB: at the time of the monastery this region was part of Denmark; it later became Sweden]
