view of baptismal dish

Scene Description: Source caption: "Lavads kyrka [...] Dopskål, mässing, drivet arbete, 1600-talet." -- [NB: the octagonal shape of the might suggest that there was another font in use at the time, but it could also have been simply a mismatch for the round basin of the medieval font -- the baptismal dish in use now [2020] is round in shape]

No entry for the font at Lavad found in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld. A baptismal font made of sandstone in the 12th or 13th century is reported in the churchyard in a 1912 photograph [1M16-B145110:1141] in the VGM Foto collection of the Västergötlands museum [https://digitaltmuseum.se/021017207643/lavad-sn-kyrkogarden-dopfunt] [accessed 2 September 2020]. Also reported in the Kyrkokartan.se entry for this church [www.kyrkokartan.se/058173/Lavads_kyrka] [accessed 2 September 2020]. The font consists of a roughly cylindrical basin, all plain, raised on a round base of roughly the same shape as the basin, but inverted; the base is decorated with a single moulding atop; all much worn and eroded. No cover present. [NB: photographic evidence [cf. ImagesArea] shows the font now [2020] at the southeast corner of the nave, but in 1930 it was located across the nave on the north side, by the pulpit; it would have been originally located at the west end of the nave, by the main entranceway into the medieval church].
