Church Location: [NB: address and coordinates given are for the old church] Suntak Sofiero 2, 522 92 Tidaholm, Sweden
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Västergötland, Västra Götalands län
Directions to Site: Located off (S) road 193, E of highway 26, 7 km SW of Tidaholm and in its municipality [NB: the old church is about 300 yards N of the new church]
Ecclesiastic Region: Skara stift
Historical Region: Vartofta härad, Skaraborgs län
Font Location in Church: [now in the new church]
Century and Period: 13th century, Late Romanesque
Church Notes: mid-12thC(?) church; oldest mural paintings probably late-15thC; planned for demolition at the time of the new 1902 church building, it was saved and has remained in use, but the old font was restored and transferred to the new church, where it is still in use
Font Notes:
Noted in Hallbäck (1971) where it appears illustrated as it did in previous sources, without the columnar extensions [cf. infra]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920629F3] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the 13th century, a font, rematks the SHN entry, without parallel in Sweden fonts ["funtens form helt unik i det svenska materialet"]; the SHN entry cites Hallbäck [cf. supra] and further notes the difference between the earlier appearance of the font and the present reconstruction. Late-19th century photographs show the medieval font still in use in the old parish church [the new one was condecrated in 1902]; the font appears to consist of a basin resting directly on a lower base; the basin is round and tapering, with very broad rib-like protrusions, also tapering in toward the bottom and ending in roll mouldings; between the ribs are sharp arris-like protrusions; ; these mouldings rested on similar mouldings on the lower base, which was also multi-lobed shaped. The reconstructed font, however, has had cylindrical columns fitted between the upper and lower mouldings, plus a broad central shaft beneath the underbowl; it is not clear whether the outer columns were recovered or newly made, but the central shaft is clearly modern. No cover present.
