view of church exterior - bell

Scene Description: Source caption: "A church bell from Saleby, Västergötland, Sweden, containing a runic inscription from 1228 AD [...] Illustration in Sveriges runinskrifter by Erik Brate (1857–1924)." -- "Den är försedd med en runinskrift som i översättning lyder: ” Då jag var gjord, då var ett tusen tvåhundra tjugo vintrar och åtta från Guds födelse. Hell Maria, full av nåd. Dionysius vare välsignad." [NB: the inscription states the bell was made in 1228 A.D., and suggests that the original dedication of the church may have been to St Mary and St Dionysius].

Font Notes:
A 1918 B&W photograph by Anders Roland shows the basin of the medieval font of the old church abandoned in the resident chaplain's garden; at some point after that the damaged stone basin was moved into the new church and placed, together with other old stone(s) inside, by the doorway; the surface of the roughly cylindrical basin is very worn but may have had some decoration on it originally. The font in use in the new church is modern, made from Kinnekulle sandstone in 1959 by Anders Ekman of Falköping.
