view of font in context
Scene Description: the medieval font, seen here inside the chancel, by the south chancel arch pillar -- the font has obviously been moved; originally it would have been by the main entranceway of the church; a photograph taken in 2003 showed the font in the northeast corner of the nave

Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920903F3] as a daptismal font made of sandstone (basin) and limestone (base) in the early-13th century. Noted and illustrated in Ullén & Ljungstedt (2003) give the material as limestone and inform that the stem of the font is a modern (1949) replacement. The font consists of a toughly hemispherical basin decorated with a blind shallow arcade of plain round arches all around the basin sides, framed by a thin moulding at top and bottom; the underbowl has a moulding; the pedestal base is plain. No cover present. There is a later font in this church made by Johan Andersson of Vadstena in 1665. Both fonts are now inside the church; the medieval font has had at least two different locations between 2003 and 2020 inside the church: in 2003 a photograph [see Images area] shows it located at the northeast corner of the nave, but a later photograph [ibid.] shows it inside the chancel; the 17th-century font is shown in a photograph [ibid.] inside the chancel, on the north side, between the altar and the sacristy doorway, but this font is mounted on a wheeled trolley and can therefore mbe moved around as needed.
