view of font and cover
Scene Description: on the left stands the font in use in the modern church: "The font is another memorial to Thomas James Batty given in 1898 by his widow" -- semi-hidden in the lower right-hand corner is a disused stone basin, perhaps the one from old font of the demolished chapel?

No individual entry found for Garsdale in the Domesday survey. The entry for Garsdale in Whitaker (1823) mentions no church in it, though it may have had one. The entry in Garsdale Info [http://www.garsdale.info/History_Church.htm] [accessed 7 February 2020] notes: "The chapel was a daughter-church of Dent without parochial privileges until 1562 when it won the right to hold baptisms and burial services" [source quoted from Boulton, D, Sedbergh Historian Vol 2, No 3, 1988, p16] "Little is known of the building eventually demolished in 1861 [...] The font is another memorial to Thomas James Batty given in 1898 by his widow" [NB: we found no information on the font of the medieval chapel or the later one which would have been introduced ca. 1562 when the chapel acquired parochial functions [cf. supra], but a photograph of the modern font taken in April 2007 by Alexander P Kapp [cf. ImagesArea] shows at its foot a round stone basin that may belong to the missing font; the basin is of roughly hemispherical shape, with a broad flat moulding all around; no base present].
