There are two entries [one is multiple-place] for this Hilton in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/NZ4611/hilton/] [accessed 17 December 2019] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "Hilton was formerly a chapel of ease to Rudby [...] The church of ST. PETER is an interesting 12th-century structure [...] Probably about the end of the 18th century the church was restored, and none of its original 12thcentury windows remain, the only ancient window being a 13th-century lancet on the north side of the chancel. [...] The font consists of an 18th-century scalloped circular bowl on a stone pedestal and has a wooden cover." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ4656611318] notes: "Simple two-cell Norman church of fairly uniform coursed squared stone. Some rebuilding [...] Early C18 font with baluster shaft and small reeded bowl."
