There are two entries [one is multi-place] for Thormanby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE4974/thormanby/] [accessed 16 December 2019] one of which reports a priest and a church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "Bertram de Bulmer (temp. Stephen [r. 1135-1154]) founded the priory of Marton for Augustinian canons and nuns. [...] He probably gave to it the church of Thormanby [...] The nave and the side walls of the chancel are substantially of 12th-century date, and the former was apparently at first aisleless. A north aisle was added about 1200, and during the succeeding century the east end of the chancel was rebuilt. [...] The font has an octagonal bowl moulded round the upper edge and chamfered back below. It probably dates from the 14th century." The entry for this church in Historic England [List Entry Number: 1191364] notes: "The church has a C12 three-bay nave and a C12 and C13 two-bay chancel, with a tower of 1822 to the west, a C18 south porch and a c.1900 vestry on the north side. [...] The C14 font nearby has an octagonal bowl moulded around the top, on a narrower octagonal stem." The entry in the VCH [cf. supra] gives the dedication as St Mary the Virgin but most other sources give it as St Mary Magalene.
